Corpus Research Center established at MUL

MUL and SISU inaugurate Corpus Research Centre at Minhaj University Lahore

Minhaj University Lahore and Shanghai International Studies University joined hands to inaugurate the Corpus Research Centre at the campus of Minhaj University Lahore.

 On a momentous occasion, Minhaj University Lahore and Shanghai International Studies University (SISU) celebrated the grand inauguration of the Corpus Research Centre (CRC). The ceremony occurred at Minhaj University Lahore and was graced by eminent scholars and researchers.

Prof. Dr Hussain Mohi-ud-Din Qadri, the Deputy Chairman of the Board of Governors at Minhaj University Lahore, and Professor Hu Kaibao, Assistant President(Pro-Vice Chancellor of the ICSA), presided over the inauguration. The event was marked by the unveiling of the CRC and the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MOU) by Prof. Dr. Sajid Mahmood Shahzad, Vice Chancellor Minhaj University Lahore, and Prof. Dr. Hu Kaibao, Assistant President(Pro-Vice Chancellor of the ICSA), Shanghai International Studies University.

The Corpus Research Center at MUL is the first research centre on corpus studies, corpus linguistics, and big language models based on Artificial Intelligence and neuro-linguistics in any private sector university in Pakistan. By establishing this Corpus Research Center, Minhaj University Lahore has joined the consortium of corpus centres of Lancaster University, the University of Pennsylvania, and Shanghai International Studies University China.

This MOU signifies a commitment to foster academic and research collaboration, including faculty and student exchange programs. In his address, Prof. Dr. Hussain Mohi-Ud-Din Qadri, Deputy Chairman, emphasized the pivotal role of Pakistan and China in the evolving global landscape, highlighting the importance of their cooperation for regional peace and development.

Prof. Hu Kaibao acknowledged Minhaj University Lahore's outstanding infrastructure and quality education, positioning it as a leading institution in the private sector. The CRC's establishment is a significant stride toward constructing corpora of different local and international languages and various regional dialects. The corpus centre would further work on translation, literary studies, and developing software backing big language models such as Chat GPT.

This monumental event witnessed the participation of esteemed guests, including Prof. Dr. Geng Qiang, Dean of ICSA, and Dr. Muhammad Afzaal from Shanghai International Studies University. The event was attended by the Registrar of Minhaj University Lahore, Dr. Khurram Shahzad, Dean of Languages, Professor Dr. Fakhr-ul-Haq Noori, and Director Corpus Research Centre, Dr. Zafer Iqbal Bhatti.

The ceremony concluded with a comprehensive tour of Minhaj University Lahore's various educational and administrative departments, further solidifying the collaboration between the two institutions. It marks a promising beginning for a future filled with academic and research achievements.
